These two 32 inch square "punishment" enclosures have been opened up to show their interior size, but originally were walled in solid with no light source or place to sit. Tiny vent holes barely provided air to live, and when snow covered them up the occupants suffocated. As many as 6 or 8 prisoners were packed in here through the iron door at the bottom. It was closed and locked, leaving the prisoners to stand in the heat and darkness. Excrement from previous detainees covered the floor. Many suffocated in here. If they survived but were to weak for labor assignments, they were sent to the gas chambers as "unfit to work". Survivors of this ordeal had to work a 10 hour shift of hard labor the next day.
