When they built St. Petersburg in the glory days before Communism, they did it with truckloads of real gold! I am not kidding, as you will see in this gallery. Thankfully, heavy-handed visionaries kept the Communists from destroying a lot of the art and architectural treasures from that era, though not without a fight. We took advantage of a personal guide and separate driver for two great days of constant touring in St. Petersburg. This gave us total flexibility to ask questions and adjust the schedule on the fly, plus add attractions as we went. St. Isaac's Cathedral was seized by the Communist and made into a museum. The government has since offered to return it to church control and purpose, but the church has so far declined due to pressure from the community to keep it a museum.
