High Island, Spring 2010

After 5 active years of basically fruitless Painted Bunting pursuit, it all came together for me on April 26, 2010 at High Island. Twelve continuous rewarding hours in the Boy Scout Woods blind produced most of the images here. It was capped by a great day of fellowship with photographer friends Wayne Wendel and Aubrey Cruse.

  • Male Painted Bunting. All but the last 14 shots in this gallery were taken at Boy Scout Woods, High Island Texas between 7:20 AM and 7:30 PM, April 26, 2010 at distances of 5 feet to 15 feet. The last 14 were walk-around shots at High Island in May at both locations. People come from all over the world to view and photgraph birds here. Days like April 26th keep them coming back.

  • This Painted Bunting moved so close to the blind while foraging we had to disconnect our tripods, back away from the front wall, and raise our lenses to reach minimum focal distance! This one was barely five feet away from my lens-less than 3 feet from the blind.
