ANAHUAC N.W.R, February 25, 2016

Lots of Shovelers in mating plumage and other species made the late winter at Anahuac very enjoyable. Aubrey Cruse III and I were greeted by an unusually harsh dawn light, which meant super clear air and rich blue skies were ahead. Winds were calm most of the morning allowing wonderful reflections in the water at Shoveler Pond. I went to Anahuac for years and never saw a single Shoveler Duck in Shoveler Pond. This day more than made up for the lean years!

Normally they will vigorously dip their head underwater a couple of times before stretching, giving photographers a warning to get ready.
